Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th Oct 2020
Hester is a fulltime printmaker with a BA (hons) Illustration and over 23 years experience of specialising in collagraph printmaking. She regularly teaches collagraph workshops and has run courses in schools and for The Woodland Trust, North Yorkshire County Council, ArtisOn Ltd and Ålgården Studio in Sweden.
Collagraph is arguably the most diverse method of printmaking with artists continually discovering new materials to use in their plate-making. It also suits many different approaches from those wishing to work in an expressive and sculptural way to those who enjoy intricate detail and delicate textures.
Hester will begin the first day with a brief introduction to her own work and a demonstration of inking, wiping and printing a plate so that participants will better understand the concept of collagraph. She will then discuss plate-making in greater detail, demonstrating various techniques including the use of collage, cutting and pastes. There will be lots of materials to work with, sample plates to look at and examples of completed collagraphs to inspire you. Participants will be encouraged to design their own collagraph plates with plenty of one-to-one advice and help to develop ideas. At the end of the day, the plates will be sealed with varnish and left to dry overnight.
The second day will begin with a more in-depth demonstration of printing a collagraph plate and there will be lots of time to discuss varying methods and approaches. Participants will then ink and wipe their plates to ‘proof’ print them before going on to develop their skills to create a number of finished prints. Throughout the day Hester will demonstrate ways to add colour to the prints e.g. by printing ‘à la poupée’ and with the use of chine collé. She will also discuss how to use extra plates to create layers of colour.
This two-day course is suitable for beginners or those wishing to develop their collagraph skills. It will be intensive but fun and participants should feel free to ask lots of questions.
