We will look at, and analyse, the basic elements of pattern as used in textile design; there will be time to practice purposeful mark-making on paper in relation to these design staples. We will look at the basics of the repeat - how and why repeats work. We will practice these ideas on paper. We will include taking a look at colour distribution within the repeat, and if there's time, practice ideas on paper.
Sarah will bring examples, both on cloth and paper, of all these – mostly drawn from her own body of work and archive.
10am - 4pm
Sunday 16th May: Painting on Textiles
We will look at the nature of painting on calico – how the inks/paints behave and work together etc – and explore ways of applying colour.
We will work on small samples at first to build up experience; students may like to think about making a more finished piece – a cushion cover, fabric for a garment, fabric as a basis for further work, a bag – as the day progresses.
Sarah will bring examples, both on cloth and paper, of all these – mostly drawn from her own body of work and archive.
10am - 4pm
