10am - 4pm
Wood engraving is a type of relief printing that uses end-grain boxwood for the image surface. The prints are usually smaller in size and have much finer marks than woodcuts, and are often designed to print in only one colour, with silvery tones and strong contrasts.
This workshop introduces you to the technique and particular character of the process, so you can go on to develop your own approach. Practice exercises will enable you to become familiar with the various tools, and help you consider the white and black areas of the design as you develop the image.
During the day, you will:
- use different tool shapes on small offcuts of boxwood, to understand how to hold them
- cut and print a practice boxwood block, following some printed examples
- develop and print an image of your own.
Tools and materials will be supplied.
