Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August or Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th August

10am-4pm (both days) (The weekend course will run 10.30-4.30 on the Saturday).

Learn to create Japanese woodblock printing in 3 colours - one to be a key block (usually black or dark colour lines) on Hoh (magnolia family) solid wood and other 2 colours on Shina plywoods.

Japanese woodblock printing, moku-hanga, is a relief printing technique, utilising a print surface that is raised above the unnecessary areas that are cut away from the wood block. Moku-hanga differs from many printmaking techniques as it is printed by hand with a pressing instrument (baren) and uses water-based ink.

You will also learn how to carve the registration mark (Kento).

The course is suitable for the beginners too.

The Tutor

Imada is a London-based painter, printmaker and site-specific installation artist. She studied art at the Tokyo Zokei University and The Slade School of Fine Art and has exhibited throughout Europe and Japan. In 2021, she was commissioned by the British Museum to create a woodblock print inspired by Hokusai’s drawing and its process was recorded to create a film to run at the exhibition ‘Hokusai: The Great Picture Book of Everything’ from 2021 to 2022 and the film now presented at Beyond the Great Wave: Works by Hokusai from the British Museum exhibition from 2022 to 2023 at the Bowers Museum in LA. The Royal Collection Trust also created a film of making colour printing at Imada’s studio to use at Japan: Courts and Culture exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery in 2022.

To mark the launch of Dr. Marten’s collaboration with The Met, Dr. Martens, a renown shoemaker asked her to create a “Dr. Martens X The Met” logo in woodblock print commemorating the partnership in 2022. Read and watch all about it here.

All of our workshops take place in our studio at 22 Arun Business Park, Shripney Road, Bognor Regis, PO22 9SX.
