Join printmaker Robin Mackenzie on this wood engraving for illustration workshop and learn the skills and techniques of a fascinating relief printing process. Over two days you will be taught the principles of designing for wood engraving, methods of engraving into blocks of end grain wood and how to print, both by hand and using a press. Suitable for beginners as well as those who would like to further their technique.
We will experiment with the myriad of marks and textures possible with the technique and investigate the possibilities of wood engraving an illustrative medium. There will be inspirational resources available and we will explore contextual examples of wood engraving through the ages.
Bring sketchbooks and ideas based on a story or poem or any other literary piece that could be illustrated!
Robin is an illustrator and printmaker specialising in the crafts of linocut and wood engraving. He regularly exhibits his work around the UK and is an elected member of The Society of Wood Engravers. He created all the wood blocks for the film about Eric Ravilious, ‘Drawn to War’.
Robin works from his studio in Dorset using a traditional cast iron Albion Press to produce his prints and through his personal work he explores the British coast and landscape.
