Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th February 2025
10am-4pm
Join printmaker Kathryn Desforges for this fun, hands-on course exploring the innovative process of wood lithography, or ‘Mokulito’ - a captivating fusion of traditional lithography and woodcutting. Unlike classic lithography done on limestone or metal plates, Mokulito embraces the unique textures of wood, creating prints that blend the boldness of woodcuts with the subtleties of lithographic drawing. You’ll learn to paint on a wood surface using lithographic materials, process your design with gum arabic, and then bring your image to life with ink on an etching press. You can also carve into the block itself, incorporating woodcut techniques for striking, one-of-a-kind results.
This course will allow you to explore the creative possibilities of this unique printmaking process, and is perfect for those with a passion for experimentation. The wood’s natural grain becomes part of the artwork, evolving with each print to create beautifully unpredictable patterns and textures. Editions of anything from 3 – 15 can be produced from one block, and your results will reflect the unique properties of each wood block, adding a sense of discovery to every piece you create. You’ll receive expert guidance and personalised instruction throughout, helping you gain a deep understanding of Mokulito while creating your own small series of prints. By the end, you’ll walk away not only with your own works of art but with the confidence and skills to continue exploring this expressive medium in your own artistic practice.

Kathryn is also teaching a Mokuhanga course on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th February.
