Monotype with Natural Materials

Monotype with Natural Materials

Like monoprint, a monotype is a print that is one of a kind but does not use a matrix like a cut block or plate. For this project we're using this simple technique to produce beautifully delicate prints using natural materials and found objects. You can also combine this with drawing materials, rollers and brushes to create a variety of marks. We have used an etching press here but you can print by hand.

You want to begin with a piece of perspex, a plastic inking plate or a sheet of drypoint plastic. Roll out a thin, even layer of ink. We have used Akua Intaglio Ink and rolling out with a Hawthorn Roller. If crisp edges are more your style, you can map out an area on your plate using masking tape. Remember to remove this before placing your objects.

You can now begin building your composition by laying your botanicals and other natural materials on top of the inked up area. They need to be thin enough to go through a press and have nothing sharp that can do any damage. Wet materials will splodge into a puddle in the press so it's best to press some flowers first before use. Fresh leaves can work well though.

Carry the plate over to the etching press. Lay a piece of paper on top – we are using Kent (dry, not dampened) and cover with blankets.

Put the print sandwich through the press. The first print taken from this sandwich gives us a solid background and white areas where the objects places on the plate have acted as a mask.

Carefully peel the materials you have used away and place them to one side. You can now print the plate again. This time the impression from the materials you have used will be revealed.

Lay the materials you peeled away ink side up on a clean sheet of Perspex (clean the original sheet or use a second sheet the same depth as the first so your press pressure remains consistent). Position your paper on top, cover with blankets and run through the press. You should be left with a delicate print.

You can also produce beautiful ghost prints by printing the plate again and again.

To make your own monotype you will need:
• Etching Press or Baren
• Sheet of perspex, Inking Plate or sheet of Drypoint Plastic
Akua Intaglio Ink
Roller
• Paper to print on such as Kent
• Natural materials such as leaves, botanicals, scrim, thread etc.

You can also print straight from the natural materials as well!
